Its Independent Retailer Month this July

Its Independent Retailer Month this July

I just found out recently a staggering fact - when you shop local - for every £1 spent, 50p-70p is likely to remain in the local economy. What with the employees wages, local suppliers and owners more likely to be living locally and re-spending the profits in the economy, it highlights how important it is to support your local shops and businesses where possible.

Independent Retailer Month is an American import and is not widely known about here but we do have lots of other organisations working to help support Indies.

We work with a large number of local and independent suppliers who make some gorgeous, unusual and amazing products and its their creativity that makes our high streets so wonderful. For example we love Ilona Drew's and Clare Harms' Brighton souvenirs, Claudia Thomas' and The Midnight Deer's jewellery and Seven Seventeen's  scented candles.  Further afield we have stocked Jessica Russell Flint since we opened who makes the most beauitiful silk eye masks from her glorious artwork and Sophie Home who's knitted cotton cushions and throws are super soft and uber colourful. For colourful leather, Ark Design from Scotland makes the most fun accessories and Nicola Rowlands has a fun sense of humour in her cards and mugs.

Just A Card supporting small independents like Present in the Laine

The JUST A CARD campaign aims to encourage people to buy from Designer/Makers and Independent Galleries and Shops by reinforcing the message that all purchases, however small, even 'just a card' are so vital to the prosperity and survival of small businesses.  Follow them on Instagram.

“Supporting local businesses is crucial if we want to keep our High Streets alive and buzzing with independent, exciting and creative shops. Don’t just talk about it - do something about it - shop local and make a real difference.”
— Patricia van den Akker, The Design Trust.
